I can't connect to the Internet through a broadband Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or cable connection.?

·         Make sure that:

·         Your modem is turned on.
·         The Ethernet cable is plugged correctly into the Ethernet port on the modem and on your computer. Each end of an Ethernet cable looks like this:
Ethernet cable
·         The phone line is plugged correctly into the modem and the phone jack.
·         You are not using a DSL filter between the phone jack and the modem.
          ·         Check the lights on your modem. These can sometimes indicate the location of the problem—whether it is the Ethernet connection, the power to the modem, or the DSL or cable connection.

         ·         Winsock corruption can cause connectivity problems. To fix this, open Network Diagnostics:
·         Open Network Diagnostics by right-clicking the network icon in the notification area, and then clicking Diagnose and repair.
          ·         Ask your Internet service provider (ISP) to verify that:
 ·         Its servers are functioning correctly.
 ·         You have an ISP user account and access to the ISP service.

Common threats to computers, basic countermeasures, options once you're breached?

Since the introduction of online computing, privacy and security issues have been the number one concern for most users. We have all been there, browsing the web and watering our online crops, when suddenly the screen freezes up, and you are forced to watch the tiny pixelated plants wilt before your eyes. Helpless and defeated, you watch as a computer virus destroys your life's work. What could be worse than being infected by a computer virus? Not knowing what to do next. Threats come in many forms and it can be difficult to isolate a single source or weak point in your network. It can be even more difficult to fight back against a virus and eradicate it from your computer, once preventive measures have failed.

The most common computer threats are manifested in the form of viruses or trojans. A virus is a program that steals data or slows down a computer by pumping it full of bloatware and adware. A trojan, aptly named, is like a Trojan horse in virus form. It is a similar type of program, but it often lays dormant before activating. These types of programs can be installed on a computer through an email attachment, watching an online video, software download, or even through a USB thumb drive inconspicuously inserted into your machine as you are waiting in line for a coffee refill in between bursts of creativity. Due to the variance in which they infect your machine, it can be difficult to locate the source of an outside threat, therefore, firewalls and other preventive options are a crucial first step.

Firewalls prevent unwanted access to your machine, and operate by restricting internet traffic. Most PCs and Macs come with an option to turn on a firewall that can greatly reduce the risk of being infected. Still, however, once turned on, a firewall may prevent some programs from performing properly. Knowing how to adjust Firewall settings and permissions l will ensure only approved internet traffic is passing through to your machine. There are programs you definitely want to communicate online. Setting the correct permissions will allow only approved programs to communicate with the outside world. While these settings may be difficult to find and adjust, it is worth the time to adjust them or have them adjusted, ensuring you can compute efficiently and securely. We here at AEmidio we are only a call away and are happy to help with any of these situations.

While preventing these threats from compromising your data is the number one line of defense, they do not always work with 100% accuracy. Therefore, there are options available when a second line of defense is needed. With the ever changing world of malicious programming, it is becoming harder and harder to know what to protect. I for one have tried my hardest to stay safe while browsing, and only use trusted websites, yet I still get occasional viruses that put a damper on my day. Antivirus programs are great at removing threats, assisting in the protection of your data, and ensuring you don't miss a guild raid and an important business deadlines. There are a ton of options available for antivirus solutions, knowing which is the best, or at least not a total waste, is crucial. Since some hackers know no bounds, they have disguised viruses as antivirus programs, as if the world knows no greater evil. The best bet is to obtain a trusted service from a well known and reputable source such as McAfee, Norton, AVG or AEmidio. We have a Proactive Antivirus solution available in our AEmidio Services. The difference between McAfee, Norton, or AVG type antivirus and AEmidio Service is that we monitor for virus intrusions and proactively fix them where other antivirus software requires you to take action we provide the action for you. Most compromised systems can be restored to their former glorious selves with a good cleaning program and a restart, although some issues require a more thorough, and potentially traumatic if not done properly, course of action.

Computer reformatting is a last ditch effort when it comes to removing a virus. The process completely wipes your computer's hard drive in an attempt to remove the virus and any trace it may have left off. In a manner similar to those necessary for spider removal, eradication of everything the virus ever touched may be the best, and only sufficient, method. However, when reformatting a disk drive, it is crucial to backup all of your files so nothing important is lost. This is a simple task that can save you from a future headache.

What happens if you don’t have an active firewall?

Should you not have an active firewall, your computer will be attacked within minutes. You have open ports and anything can come through the disabled firewall. It’s like leaving your door open to your home and putting money on the table for everyone to come in and grab. Once viruses, malware, worms, and Trojans see that vulnerability in your network, your computer screen will fill with pop ups, spyware and malware will start running and take up computer resources. It could render your computer unusable within an hour or so.

This is why having an active and updated firewall is so important. Unsure about your firewall or don’t have any idea if it is enabled? Contact AEmidio Services for assistance for ensuring that your firewall is active, updated, and working like the security guard it is.

Check Out what is firewall and why it is important

Have you ever been told to make sure your firewall is turned on in your computer settings or to check your modem to see if the firewall is configured properly? Have you ever wondered, "What is a firewall?"  This post is going to give you a basic overview to answer that question and move you toward a better understanding of what a firewall is??

Firewalls are unseen warriors that prevent your network and computer from being attacked by unwanted viruses and overloads of information. Imagine a guard at the gate of a castle. The guard knows who to let in and out through the gate. The strong, stone walls of the castle keep help the guard thwart off intruders meaning to do harm to those inside. This is what a firewall does at a minimum for your network and computer. Firewalls can be found in your modem, router, computer settings, as well as in your anti-virus program. While having an active firewall is strongly recommended, having too many can cause conflict with programs as well as with other active firewalls within the network.  Let’s break this topic apart and figure out exactly what a firewall is, what it does, and why it is important. We will also look at what can happen if you don’t have one.

What exactly is a firewall?

Google notes that a firewall is a wall or partition designed to inhibit or prevent the spread of fire. Well, that is not what we are looking for. Ah, it also notes that it is a part of a computer system or network that is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting outward communication of a program, or even a piece of hardware. Along with your antivirus program, it can help to keep out hackers, viruses and worms that try to reach your computer. At a minimum, you should have a firewall enabled in your computer. Whether it is the default one on the computer or one that is activated by the installation of your antivirus, make sure that you have one active at all times to help prevent any infections or attacks on your system. While no firewall or antivirus program is 100%, working together, they are the best defense against viruses that can harm your computer.

What does a firewall do?
Firewalls are filters. They look at all information coming through your internet connection that is attempting to reach your home network and computer. If an incoming piece of information is flagged by the filters, it is not allowed to come through. Having a basic understanding of how webservers work can enable you to understand what can happen if one packet of information infiltrates your firewall and can infect multiple computers on the same network. Firewalls, like computers constantly update themselves. If you prevent your firewall software or firmware (within the hardware) from updating, it can cleave a hole in the firewall which, when found, can be exploited by incoming infections and attacks. This can take down an entire network and leave you having to replace multiple devices or paying to have your machines cleaned up.

Why are firewalls important?
Firewalls are like security guards of your home network. They provide around the clock protection. Rules can be established to prevent certain types of data from coming into the network or computer as well. This is sort of like parental controls. Prohibiting specific types of data from entering your network is beneficial in that as it can reduce conflicts that arise from specific programs accessing computers on your network.

Why Anti Virus is important for computer

Actively utilizing computer antivirus protection is as important as making sure you have health or homeowners insurance. Protecting your computer from viruses is important to safeguard your data and personal information you may be storing. Viruses also degrade the performance and usability of your computer. These harmful computer programs are adapting daily to affect your computer and can vary in their effects. You can view this list of different types of computer viruses to learn more. It is difficult to keep all these malicious programs at bay by yourself. However, there are numerous companies providing antivirus protection for your computer with different levels of supportz

Identify Your Protection Needs

Antivirus software is the best way to protect your computer around the clock, but there are many choices for which program to use. You will first want to check on if your computer has antivirus protection installed already. You also need to identify your computer’s operating system in order to pick the right software. Most pre-installed software, such as Microsoft’s Windows Defender for Windows 10, does a good job of protecting your computer, but a third party program is often best to keep you completely protected. If you’ve already picked a program, you can usually opt for additional licenses at a discount if you have multiple computers you want to protect.

More About Your Protection Options

You will come across both free and paid programs or software for antivirus protection. It is good to note that paid programs or software with a good review history are a safer choice than free antivirus protection. The free software may still scan for common viruses but usually lacks real-time protection, display’s advertisements, or has no support channels. You should compare your options and look at what features they provide to match your protection needs. Base level software usually protects against malware and can scan email and web pages for viruses. Adding a suite level package can give you features like remote access and advanced controls.
Making the decision to better protect any information on your computer could save you the trouble and time of dealing with viruses or hackers in the future. It is important to act quickly and arm your computer with anti-virus protection.

Still don’t know which protection program would be best for your computer against viruses? We at AEmidio are available to help you with advising, installing and keeping you protected. Give us a call at 1-888-995-8019 during our working hours or leave a message
